Depo of Witness K Vol. 1 (2-1-07)
The deposition transcript redactions are necessitated by a protective order sought and obtained by the Archbishop and his lawyers during the coordination proceeding. The following summary identifies by page and line number key portions of deposition testimony that would have been utilized had the Father Kelly cases proceeded to trial.
Witness K is the mother of Kelly victim Witness P. Witness K testified during her deposition that in the late 1950s she told two Sisters of Bethany who lived in the convent that Father Kelly would call and ask for her son (Depo page 50, line 21 to page 51, line 3; page 52, line 24 to page 53, line 7), and that Father Kelly was taking boys to his cabin (the location where Kelly abused many of his victims). Depo page 48, line 9 to page 50, line 5; page 59, lines 18 to 22. Nun Witness L is one of the two Sisters of Bethany.
She also told them she was concerned about Father Kelly taking her son to the cabin (Depo page 26, line 22 to page 27, line 13; Depo page 51, line 4 to page 53, line 13), that she was worried about Kelly's level of interest in her son (Depo page 61, line 5 to line 21), and that she did not understand why Kelly was so focused on her son (Depo page 63, line 23, to Depo page 62, line 6).
She also testified they told her not to worry because Kelly was a priest. Depo page 26, line 22 to page 27, line 13; Depo page 48, line 9 to page 50, line 5.
Finally, she testified that after she told the nuns her concerns about her son and Father Kelly, she stopped attending mass at Our Lady, prompting the sisters to tell her she should forgive Father Kelly. Depo page 96, line 5 to page 98, line 7.
Contrast Witness K's testimony with that of nun Witness L, a current Sister of Bethany who was assigned to the convent next door to Father Kelly's parish during the period of abuse of, among other victims, survivor Witness P.
